I personally visited the more popular health clubs to see for myself why I encounter so many unsatisfied health club clients. To begin with, the least expensive club I visited proudly charges $50.00 per hour for a trainer. I'll get back to this point later on.
I asked to speak to the manager and out came a pretty big guy who introduced himself as the Fitness Manager. I just had a few questions.....
1) How do I go about becoming a trainer?
2) Do I need any experience?
My new friend, the Fitness Manager was happy to tell me that all I'd have to do was sit through a 6 day training course and I'd be club certified (meaning I could only legally train at that club and in no way could this certificate be valid to purchase a business license, liability insurance, or train anywhere else, the club owns the certificate). As for experience, I learned that I could become a fitness club trainer without EVER stepping foot in a gym before. If I could pass a test, I can become one of their team. At that time, I stood up, shook my new friends hand and thanked him for his time.
Let's get in to the Real Deal about health clubs. It's big business, BIG business. So let's face it, in the name of business it's all about a profit. The clubs became empires by overcharging clients for MEDIOCRE training. I say mediocre because that's exactly what it is. If a health club trained people legitimately, they would TEACH fitness, not just feed you enough information to where you're reliant on them.
Shouldn't training have a completion date? Doesn't that make sense? Would you take a college course that never ended just because the school only taught one paragraph per year? I know that's an exageration, but it does relate. The "training" offered at the clubs will keep you coming back for years, why is that? Here's why..... If they taught you the mechanics of the body, proper training techniques, and good nutritional habits, you'd be self sufficient in a couple months. Thats The Real Deal!!!
